After signing with the record label Capitol Music Group, there are few people who have not heard of former gospel singer Katy Perry, who's breakthrough single 'I Kissed A Girl' quickly led to worldwide recognition and fame on the music circuit.
Katy Perry quickly proved beyond her number one that she was not one hit wonder. Her wonderfully honest and fun personality has created a very strong fanbase whom she has rewarded with a succession of albums and singles which have all been regulars in many top songs lists, such as Billboard's top 100. She also has her own range of perfumes and is netting guest slots on TV shows such as X-Factor and, on the fun side of things, Sesame Street.
Having married Russell Brand last year, an equally quirky and loveable character in the showbiz industry, Katy has come a long way from her church performances as a teenager and is now known for her risqu outfits and her wonderfully tongue-in-cheek humour both on and off the stage, nerding out in braces and pigtails for the cover of T.G.I.F in May and doing a skit on Sesame Street that was considered too raunchy for children's TV. It's this down to earth attitude that has helped cement her popularity with many people and her look is widely sought.
As we've seen from her many on-stage performances, Katy Perry loves to try new looks that are guaranteed to be eye openers. She is an advocate of the latest fashions from designer brands, showing a taste for the good stuff, and showed off in a green dress with puffed shoulders at the Jean Charles de Castelbajac Autumn/Winter collection, and looked every inch the partier for a night-out in an Emma Cook swan-print dress. Punk is in her repertoire too, and she stepped out in a D&G's Johnny Depp tank-top and checked skirt with garters attached to it while in Tokyo.
It's because of her cheeky appeal that many firms and companies want to invite her to act as their ambassador for their products, and it was Thomas Sabo, a long-running German watch jeweller, who came first past the post to unveil Katy as the face of their brand in May of this year. The watches reflected Katy perfectly, with sophistication in the face but fun and bright pinks and oranges running through the straps.
For the shoots she brought her killer looks to the range, which beside gorgeous watches included heart-shaped pendants and bangles. As for herself, she wowed audiences in California last week with a diamond-set ring inspired by 'Bang-Bang I shot you down' and a daring pendant from AKILLIS, a French jewellery brand. Both pieces stood out, just like the singer herself as she sang to support foreign-based soldiers.
It was during an interview and photo-shoot for Rolling Stone magazine, though, that she was able to talk frankly about her own feelings and how her political awareness is much higher than it was a few years ago. Perhaps the underlying reason for her casual take on the music and fashion industry rests with this; she feels that there are bigger issues at stake.
So, short of becoming a full-time political activist we can probably expect a lot more from Katy Perry. Her love of jewellery and fashion will inevitably turn up more memorable turn-outs from the singer, and her music career is far from waning at the moment.
