Dirk Nowitzki as the Leader of Dallas Mavericks towards the Championship

By Madilyn R. Keehn

Dirk Nowitzki was the player who acted as the leader guiding the NBA champions for 2011. He had his team's back whenever anyone needed him. Whether it be a 102 degree fever or a broken middle finger due to injury, all of these never stopped him to help his team acquire the coveted title. He is a stud, the next Hall Of Famer, and the most underrated NBA player ever.

But just as much as Nowitzki was the Mavs leader, he likewise got the support from his role players and buddies also. Jason Terry began quietly in the 2011 NBA Playoffs, but turned it up to a different level when the games demand so. He drained most likely the biggest shot of his career to end game 5, over top of the one and only Lebron James, while scoring an amazing 27 points for the 6th game.

Jason Kidd hit big shot after big shot, safeguarded the basketball, and continually hit the open player as he's done his whole career. How about J.J. Barea? He is nicely listed as 6 feet tall, when in reality he's probably about 5'10 in shoes. But he spent the full series participating a major role in defense against Miami Heat, and even considered the Dallas's Mighty Mouse.

Tyson Chandler and Shawn Marion were also very consistent with their respective games. Defensive rebounding, offensive rebounding, blocking shots, they just dominated the inside for Dallas Mavericks. Even Deshawn Stevenson and Brian Cardinal performed their functions extremely well. Stevenson hit big shots as the game demands, and Cardinal arrived with intensity guarding guys that left the announcers "oooh-ing" and "ahh-ing". This is indeed one of the finest basketball team in the NBA's history.

To tell the truth, I am not sure if any team in any scenario could have defeated the Dallas Mavericks in these NBA Finals. These folks were the team of destiny, and were humble the entire time. Dirk Nowitzki continues to be humble since he arrived to the league 10 years ago. When Dwayne Wade referred to Dirk for not being clutch back in 2006, and saying that was the reason why the Mavs lost; Dirk did not act in response, he simply anxiously waited for his shot to prove Wade completely wrong. The 2011 NBA championship is indeed the best time for such response.
