Famous Graphic Designers That Paved The Way

Just as with any commonly used intellectual or creative field there are people in history who have paved the way. Creating new ideas and thinking out of the box to come up with the concepts that are used today. Below are a few famous graphic designers that have done just this in their field of expertise.

Giambattista Bodoni was an Italian man who was born in 1740 and died in 1813. He worked in the industry of printmaking as a publisher and printer. During the course of his work he designed and engraved typefaces, the most famous of which was named after him, typeface Bodoni. Aldus Manutius, another publisher and printer, was made famous by his creation of the italic typeface style.

More recently is an Englishman by the name of Neville Brody who by profession is a graphic designer and typographer. He is most recognized for his work in two magazines in the 80s and 90s, The Face and Arena. He is also well known for doing album covers for popular music artists such as Depeche Mode. He opened his company Research Studios in 1994 with his partner Fwa Richards.

David Carson is one of the most influential illustrative designers of the 1990s. His designs featured heavily in skateboarding and surfing magazines. He may also be referred to as the Father of Grunge, becoming famous for veering outside the rules that had been set in place and therefore creating his signature style.

Another English man by the name of Jonathan Ive, born February 1967, is a product designer rather than a graphic designer. He is the principle designer behind the iMac, MacBook, iPod and other such products in Apple Inc. Making him on of the most famous designers of the 21st century.

One of the foremost innovators in the discipline of graphics and advertising is Paul Rand. He had a huge influence in the area of advertising, corporate identity and branding creating logos for major companies like UPS, IBM, Enron, ABC and Westinghouse. He has written some books on the subject as well as taught a Yale University.

A man who started off as a simple engraver of gun barrels and gun locks made his mark in history by creating a typeface that was used in the United States Declaration of Independence, first edition. He was an English man by the name of William Caslon.

One of the earliest artisans to be classified as a graphic designer is William Morris. He designed stained glass windows, unique wallpapers and textiles. He eventually set up his own printing press in 1891 and went on to design 3 typefaces and producing a number of books.

Corporate identity and branding would not be what it is without the help of Wally Olins. He wrote a book by the name of Corporate Identity that is considered to be the starting point of serious study on the topic. He co-founded Wolff Olins, which is a corporate identity and branding agency.
