The Celebrated Hollywood Sign as One of the Hollywood Landmarks

By Luz Z. Casarez

Is there a more famous landmark on earth than the legendary Hollywood sign? The answer to that question is undoubtedly dubious but no one would refute the fact the Hollywood sign would be on the top ten of any major list of world points of interest. And why would it not be? Hollywood remains one of the most magical places on earth as it blends the history, fantasia, and business of the entertainment world into one geographic region. Needless to say, millions of individuals have ventured to Hollywood trying to find fame. A few were successful and some were not but all of them saw this amazing welcoming sign when they ventured to the area.

Since 1923, this sign definitely presented an incredible welcome to the scores of tourists that have come to this amazing town. It really is hard to miss the sign as it rests atop Mount Lee in the world famous Santa Monica Mountains. The sign itself is 45 feet tall and 350 feet wide...not quite easy to miss!

Was the intended purpose of the sign to welcome all those head to Hollywood? No, it was created for the purpose of advertising and marketing. The advertising had nothing to do with movies or celluloid heroes. Surprisingly, the goal of the sign was to draw awareness of...houses.

The sign was completed in 1923 and bared the words HollywoodLand and never stops being an iconic banner heralding the greatness of this legendary celluloid town. H.J. Whitley and Harry Chandler were in the process of developing a housing complex and thought the name HollywoodLand was perfect for it. The two needed a means of marketing their new development and the concept of a massive sign on the side of the Hollywood Hills was thought to be a novel way of doing this.

The Crescent Sign Company constructed the sign with the intention to allow it to stand for a couple of years prior to losing its impression. This would have been true had Hollywood not become a renowned town for the show business. Over time, people presumed the sign was meant to herald the entertainment business. That is simply the purpose it serves nowadays even though that was never the original intention.

The sign has long since risen beyond just marketing vehicle. It is a symbolic representation of American pop culture that functions as a herald for all that the city signifies.

It's unusual how landmarks work out occasionally. Even the best laid marketing plans can fall short miserably but iconic images including the Hollywood Sign are purely spontaneous. Iconic truly is the right word to describe it. Even after nearly 90 years the sign remains formidable and proud. Most likely, the sign will serve another 90 years.
