There is a story about American troops in Europe during the First World War noticing a new kind of shirt. The Doughboys of the USA were sweating their hearts out wearing wool uniforms while dock laborers were working coolly in cotton short sleeve shirts without buttons. Whether this story is true or not will be left to clothing historians to sort out, fold and put in the proper drawer. One thing is true and that is that graffiti tee shirts are hot and cool.
World War II uniforms included tees and soldiers spent a lot of time in them sans outer uniform blouse, especially in the warmer climates. After demobilization, these soldiers came home, put away the uniforms but kept out the tees. In the fifties movie stars started to appear in them on the silver screen. These included legends like Marlin Brando and James Dean.
These shirts were still shy, however, until the sixties, not to be seen outside of the casual home or rough work environment. During the not so peaceful decade of peace and love, the tee shirt became the uniform of the university peaceniks, who used them as tie-died banners emblazoned with slogans like Give Peace A Chance. Tees have never really returned to the underwear drawer since then.
As many people know too well and feel sad about, the seventies, eighties and nineties went by in a flash, and the famous tee continued to be emblazoned with catchy words and phrases designed more to amuse and warm the heart than to cause any kind of sea change. Envision Whirled Peas just about sums up these three decades.
The first decade of the 21st Century brought a real revolution to the tee shirt business. As before tees were available everywhere one might go in the real world. Now they were everywhere in the cyber world. All that was necessary to have a new shirt design go viral around the world was a catchy phrase like, Change We Can Believe In.
Now as we bravely enter the second decade of the new century there surely can be no ground has the tee shirt has not already covered. Perhaps there is nothing left to be emblazoned on this most favorite of shirts. And maybe North Korea has stopped being a pain in the collective backside of the entire world.
For of course there is a new trend and that is the graffiti tee. Graffiti artists may have run out of space on bridges and schoolhouse walls, but they have discovered that there are millions of square feet of absolutely blank cotton fabric to be tagged. Some of the new graffiti shirts are just plain beautiful to look at and there are designs galore. And like the sixties, there is a message in there somewhere, although it might not be clear. Go out and get one today.
