Background Information On Metallica's James Hetfield

By Drew D. Ward

James Alan Hetfield's father, who left the family early, was named Virgil and his mother was named Cynthia. He has a younger sister and two half-brothers. He is of German, English, Irish and Scottish ancestry. James Hetfield was born on August 3, 1963 in Downey, California.

James became dependent on music at sixteen, when his mother died of cancer. He began to play with a lot of amateur bands. But he was always interested in music, having learned piano at the age of nine and guitar at the age of fourteen. He also learned to play the drums.

His professional music career began in the seventies, when he played with two short-lived bands: Obsession and Leather Charm. He was also working in a sticker printing factory. In 1981, an ad in the newspaper is what brought him to Lars Ulrich, a drummer. Together with guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney, they formed the heavy metal band Metallica. Currently, Robert Trujillo is their bassist (since 2003) and Kirk Hammett is their lead guitarist (since 1982).

Metallica earned a spot in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, after producing albums that went multi-platinum and chart-topping records. In Hit Parade's list of "The 100 Greatest Metal Vocalists of All Time" he was listed as number 24. He was also ranked 8th in Joel McIver's "the 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists".

The band also won nine Grammys with him as their main songwriter. He wrote the band's ever-so popular "Nothing Else Matters" from their 5th album, "Metallica". The album was #1 on the Billboard 200 at its debut, selling over 600,000 copies. It is the 26th best-selling album in the US. "Nothing Else Matters" placed 34th on the Billboard Hot 100 and 11th on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks.

He lives the life of both a family man and heavy rocker to-date. In 1997, James Hetfield married Francesca Tomasi on August 17. They have three children named Marcella, Castor and Cali.
