Celebrity Sightings in Aspen, Colorado

By Robert Nickel

Aspen was founded as a mining town in 1879, by a small group of rebel coal miners. The governor of the region at that time pleaded with the miners to cross the Continental Divide to avoid a supposed uprising of the Ute Indians. The miners didn't want to give up their claims, so they tucked in and stayed. The town flourished and was officially incorporated in 1881. Mining eventually fell off, and due to the location of the Colorado Mountains, ski tourism took off in Aspen. The permanent population sits at around 5000, but it is the part time residents that really draw interest.

Many celebrities from around the world have chosen Aspen for one of their regular get away locations. Professional athletes are particularly interested in the town, in part for its outdoor activities. Lance Armstrong has a home in Aspen, as do David and Victoria Beckham. Olympic Silver Medalist Gretchen Bleiler resides there, as does NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson. Martina Navratilova spends the off-season from tennis in Aspen, perhaps to stay fit while skiing. Several other well known athletes frequent the ski hills around Aspen, it only takes a little bit of patience and the right timing to spot them.

World entertainers also enjoy Aspen. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones spend a lot of their down-time on the slopes, along with their children. Don Johnson has been known to stay for months at a time. There is a long list of actors who take their breaks from hectic movies schedules in Aspen: Jack Nicholson, Kevin Costner, Charlie Sheen, Goldie Hawn, Jim Carrey, Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith and Kurt Russell. Even music artists such as Mariah Carey and Beyonce Knowles have been sighted in the picturesque little town.

Other noteworthy people who can be seen in Aspen are perhaps not as recognizable as the above names, but they do have interesting stories. Aron Ralston is a mountaineer resident of Aspen. He knows the terrain surrounding the area very well and some would say he has left a part of him there forever - literally. While on a hike Mr. Ralston fell from a cliff and got his hand wedged under a large boulder. No matter what he did, he could not get the hand out. So he cut it off at the wrist.

Most of us are familiar with the natural beauty of Aspen, either from travel magazines, reputation or the movie Dumb and Dumber. If you are a celebrity enthusiast, Hollywood and the rest of California is not your only place for celebrity sightings. Aspen is a great place to people watch too!
