Should we follow the fashions endorsed by actors, sports stars and pop stars? The last decade has seen this new phenomenon emerging. If it's not perfume to promote, it's a brand new clothing line. Celebrities have become designers in their own right, but should they be ascribed that moniker?
Victoria Beckham has emerged as one of the more successful stars to launch a clothing brand. Even though her first range was met with negativity from the fashion world, in 2010 she surprised even the pessimists with her classy collection, gaining celebrity fans along the way. Her clothing label appears to have the credibility that others crave.
Jennifer Lopez, one of Victoria's LA buddies, is also no stranger to fashion. It was ten years ago that she developed the JLO line which supposedly reflected her 'unique sense of style'. Beyonc and her mother, Tina Knowles, followed three years later and developed the high-end fashion line House of Dereon in 2004. Then she teamed up with her sister to create the more affordable Dereon line, marketed to younger customers. The Dereon name is derived from her grandmother's name, Agnez Dereon, a Southern seamstress and dressmaker.
Sarah Jessica Parker, who played the fashion-conscious Carrie Bradshaw in Sex in the City has surprised everyone and launched a line aimed at the lower end of the market. Available at Steve & Barry's stores in the US, the line is called Bitten, with the slogan "Fashion is not a luxury "and sizes range from 2 to 22.
Women aren't the only ones getting creative with clothes. Rapper Jay-Z was a trailblazer when he launched the famous 'Rocawear' label on the world and friend Sean 'Diddy' Combs unleashed his Sean John range in 1999. Teaming up with a childhood friend in 2005, Justin Timberlake also put his name to the William Rast clothing label.
