Steps To Follow When Making Crocheted Headbands

By Christina Workman

The best way to make something have sentimental value is to spend time working on it by oneself. For this reason, crocheted headbands make a perfect gift for both the young and old. They are perfect as gifts for friends, little girls and even for newborns. They are also great as a personal accessory.

These attractive bands come in an array of different color schemes and different design patterns. Crocheting any type of band requires some basic skill in crocheting. The person who has some knowledge in crocheting and some sense of style is the ideal person who should carry out the headband crocheting job. This job will involve several steps outlined below.

The first step in making these knitted garlands would be to measure the head that it is being made for. This done by measuring diameter of one's head and this in turn will be the measurement of the length of the band. This figure should be jotted down so as to avoid any mistakes when it comes to determining the length of the band.

Before commencing on the crocheting, one needs to select the yarn that they will use. Another thing that one should have handy is the crotchet hook that will be used in making this creation. It does not take a lot of yarn to make a knitted circlet. All one needs to do is select the color that they desire.

The type of yarn that is chosen will affect the type of crotchet hook that will be used. If the yarn is the normal worsted- weight, then a G hook would be suitable for the tack at hand. The general rule of thumb is that the lighter the yarn that is being used the finer the needle should be. The same applies when it comes to how heavy the yarn is. Knitted garlands that are being made for newborns and babies should always be made from fine yarn rather than heavy yarn that could scratch the baby's sensitive skin.

The next step would be creating a chain of stitches. About seven stitches would be sufficient. There should be one crochet in each stitch thus ending up with six crochet stitches. One has to take note that once she gets to the end of a row of stitches, they need to be chained and turned. This should be followed by putting in back loops. The back loops are what create a ribbing stitch. One should ensure that throughout the knitted garland there are only single crochets in each of the back loops. Once done with this, the similar process of chaining and turning should be adhered to.

Crocheted headbands will look good when they are finished with tails. When sewing headbands, the very last process after finishing the sewing process is cutting off the un-used yarn and leaving over a tail measuring twelve inches or less. The person knitting will be able to sew the two ends together if there is a tail.
