Waheeda Rehman enacts various roles with perfection and is a great performer. She is considered to be one of the most popular movie stars of the Indian Film industry. She was born in a conservative Muslim family from the place called Chengalpattu in the state of Tamil Nadu.
She acted in movies when it was the golden span of Hindi cinema, she could also create a niche for herself because of her stellar performaces. Although, her ambition was to be a doctor, her ill health did not permit her to do so. Waheeda Rehman was however trained to become a classical Bharatanatyam dancer. With the support of her parents, she started acting in films in Chennai, where she did about four movies. She performed a folk dance in the film Rojulu Maravi and it was liked by the masses.
While she was basking in the glory of her success in Hyderabad, she was selected by Guru Dutt to play a role of a vamp in his movie CID. Once this movie became an excellent success, Waheeda Rehman, was cast in a leading role in the next movie Pyaasa in the year 1957. With hints of being linked with director Guru Dutt, she drifted apart from him after the release of Kaagaz Ke Phool in the year 1959.
But, with the film Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), they came back together. Yet another movie that Waheeda and Dutt did together was Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. This movie was not received well at the Berlin Film Festival.
She performed in many hit films directed by other popular film makers after Guru Dutt's death. For the performance in Guide, she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award and got good reviews. The 1968 movie Neel Kamal too was a major success. She went on to win the National Award for her sensational performance in Reshma Aur Shera. Though some of her Hindi films could not succeed. She got married to Kamaljit who acted with her in Shagun. She gave birth to Kashvi and Sohail.
Waheeda Rehman started acting again after 12 years, when she moved back to Mumbai following the death of her husband. She selected elderly roles like that of mother and grandmother. Her films Om Jai Jagdish, Rang De Basanti, Water and Delhi 6 are received well by the audience.
Waheeda participated in audience discussion about her most triumphant movies in a Waheeda Rehman film presentation. Even when some fans consider Khamoshi to be her best film, some others also believe that her remarkable performances in Teesri Kasam, Pyaasa and Guide will never be forgotten.
