Architectural Homes: Georgian homes

By Luis Pezzini

There are many homes, particularly in older cities, in which the architectural homes that reign supreme are those that are considered Victorian architecture. These homes are those that people see and amazed at the size of the home and the characteristics of the home are often cited to be charming, noble and overall amazing. But what is it about these Victorian architectural homes that set these apart from other homes in the market?

First off, the person must realize that there are many themes that are found in Victorian architecture. There are three dominant themes in Victorian architecture, and these are the Queen Anne architecture, Gothic Revival architecture, and Italianate architecture. The characteristics of Queen Anne architecture is that these homes is that they more times than not contain what we now refer to as towers and bay windows. These homes are usually very tall and have porches that wrap around the width of the home. For those that have ever been to San Francisco, they are going to see these types of homes in abundance.

One of the other common themes of these homes is the way that they are laid out. When people first walk into the home they are going to walk into a large welcoming area, with the kitchen and living room off to each side. The bedrooms are going to be on the second floor and are usually located more towards the rear of the house. The basic idea of these homes is to use the four rooms on the bottom floor with four rooms on the top floor in order to create even more symmetry within the home.

The Italianate style of architecture during the Victorian era of architecture was most often looked at with a dominant characteristics of a flat roof. Those homes that had another common attribute and this is the brackets that hang along the edge of the roof that looked as if they were hand made and held the roof in place, though this was just for looks.

Of all these styles that are considered Victorian architectural, probably the one that most people are going to relate to is the Queen Anne homes. The reason is that these are what come to mind when the person thinks of Victorian architecture. Though this is a style that dominated years ago, there are still those that build new homes with these themes in the architecture simply because many people find these looks to be breathtaking and one way in which they can sit their home apart from those in the area that they live.
