Majorca: Home of the rich and famous

By Jeremy Tankfallow

The Balearic Island Majorca is the largest of the Spanish islands in terms of area, and is the second largest in terms of population. There is a booming nightlife on the south of the island for the young, as well as gorgeous beaches elsewhere which make it a hot spot for tourism, mostly from Germany, the UK and Ireland. These desirable features are clearly the reason that so many famous people have lived on the island.

Majorca has been the home, and still is, to many famous people, and this is a brief mention of just a few names that will ring bells. In the 19th century there were people of great import who lived or were from Majorca. The military commander Joaquin Jovellar y Soler was one of them, and probably more famously, Antonio Maura Montaner who was twice the Spanish Prime Minister. More recently, however, there are many great sportsmen who live on the island including the tennis players Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya.

People from the creative industries have also made their home on Majorca, including artists and academics. Ramon Llull, the famous writer and philosopher as well as one of the most renowned piano players Frdric Chopin, and the surrealist painter Joan Mir, have all lived on the island at some point in their lives. The 19th and 20th century owe a lot, creatively, to Majorca.

Modern celebrities have also been known to reside on the island. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones bought a house there in the 90s and they live in it for half the year, apparently. Others include the model/actress Claudia Schiffer, the former wife of John Lennon Cynthia Charles, and Annie Lennox, most famous for her work with the Eurhythmics.

Jorg Martinez, winner of the 2006 world 250cc motor cycling title, the tennis player Boris Becker, the former England footballer Steve McManaman and the infamous F1 racer Michael Schumacher are more people, famous in the world of sports, who have or do live on the island. Majorca has been home to a huge amount of famous people, whether they were actually raised there or moved there later, and as such it is an important place, socially and historically.
