Easy To Make Knit Headbands For Beginners

By Hillary Mayo

It is often difficult to find something that an inexperienced knitter or child can easily accomplish as a first project. Something that is very simple to create but that can be practical and given as a gift are knit headbands. Chunky bands look great instead of a hat in winter to keep your ears warm.

You can customize your band to match any outfit you want, perhaps a cheer leader uniform, ballet clothes, school wear or your favorite coat. They can be made with just a few basic stitches using one or more colors and once complete you can add embroidered decoration if you want to personalize your work further.

Once you have selected the yarn you would like make sure you have the correct size needles to work it. If your needles are too slender your finished work may be too tight and not stretchy enough. For a lacey effect you may want to use oversized needles, but if the work is too loose it may not be snug when worn.

Decide how wide you want the band and cast on enough stitches to get that width. You might need to help a child with casting on, and then let them work the main body of the garment. After you have worked a few rows you will be able to see how it is going to turn out and can adjust the size if necessary.

The easiest method is to use all plain knitting or garter stitch which gives a stretchy ribbed look. If your band looks too wide or too narrow, then you can start over with more or less stitches. These headbands are so simple and quick to make it is no problem to have a couple of tries to get it right.

For a slightly different look you could make single, double or even treble rib. If you are using a fine thread you could use stocking stitch to give a nice smooth look to the work. If you do choose this method you may need to be very careful about the sizing as it will not be as stretchy as using garter or rib.

You can use a soft tape to measure around you head, or simply keep working until it fits. Do not over stretch when measuring the garment as it needs to have some give to get it on and off. Add a few rows to ensure the correct length is necessary. After you bind off, sew the ends together and you have your first knit headband.
