Four Unique Tricks To Make That Perfect Homemade Desktop Wallpaper!

By Rex Tango

Tired of looking at the same old collection of wallpapers in your computer? Unfortunately, even the online method of searching through tons of free pictures to pick the one that really inspires you can be a dud. If you belong to the club that has looked everywhere for that 'right' picture, then maybe it is time you created your own little masterpiece.

Family photos dumped into your PC's storage are a good place to start with your artistic endeavour. Take the time and go through the pictures and single out a few that you really think would make your wallpaper stand out. A word of advice, try choosing those that have the highest picture quality as well as resolution. This would ensure that your final product after all the cropping and sizing does not look 'grainy' when blown up.

Play around with the pictures in your photo editor to get the right look. Try the different color tones, hue and saturation adjustments. Generally, daylight photos look better with sepia and neutral saturation while artificial light photographs can be made richer with black and white tones. Moreover, close-ups always look royal in black and white. Do not forget to set the new dimensions. If you are using a widescreen then go for the 16:9 aspect ratio.

If family portraits are not your flavour, then you could try out movie still shots. Any decent DVD player application has a screen shot button that will let you capture as many screen shots as you like. The only point of caution here is to go for those movies that fill the screen when played on full-screen mode otherwise you will have to do the extra bit of removing those annoying black borders from the top and bottom of each shot.

Another great wallpaper source is games. These screen shots become even more worthwhile if you are running your games at their highest resolutions. While this screen capture option is provided in the most games, the same can also be done through third party still-shot capturing software like Snagit and the types. Simply pause your game, run the capture software, take the necessary shots by going back into the game and save them for later touch-ups.

Finally, you can literally create wallpapers if you know some basic graphic designing. Just treat the black screen of your monitor as the canvass and go free on your artistic instincts. However, do remember to save them as picture files ( .jpg, .bmp etc) otherwise you will not be able to open them on your picture viewing software.
