Is the Gwyneth Paltrow Diet the Most Extreme Diet?

By Caitlin Ryan

Gwyneth Paltrow's country singing debut may not have been her only mistake in the last decade or so. Apparently, her eating habits over the last several years have left her in a rather brittle situation.

It seems the Gwyneth Paltrow diet may have left the beautiful, skinny star with some rather brittle bones. She was diagnosed with a condition called osteopenia. Osteopenia patients have a low bone density, but not as low as patients with osteoporosis. Osteopenia most often leads to osteoporosis.

Why would the Gwyneth Paltrow diet cause her to have low bone density and become subject to brittle bones and fractures? Well, the Gywneth Paltrow diet is a macrobiotic diet which consists mainly of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and a bit of fish. The diet has kept the actress super slim over the years, but is it really harmful or the most extreme diet?

The Gwyneth Paltrow macrobiotic diet is vegetarian (except for the fish) and can be rather healthy. The word "macrobiotic" means a great life, so the diet is often deemed a way of life rather than just a diet to lose weight.

There are other benefits of the Gwyneth Paltrow diet. The diet is high in fiber which can help prevent heart disease and aid in weight loss as well as fighting free radicals damage. The diet is also high in phytochemicals which have antioxidant properties to help prevent cancer and premature aging.

The Gwyneth Paltrow diet is also low in saturated fats. Not only does this promote weight loss, but it also helps prevent heart disease. To boot, the fats in the diet are mono and polyunsaturated fats, which help lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol.

So, what's up with those brittle bones? Is Gwyneth's condition caused by her diet? The Gwyneth Paltrow diet may be low in calcium and it certainly lacks vitamin D because it does not include consuming dairy products. We began fortifying dairy products with vitamin D years ago. Still, if done correctly, the Gwyneth Paltrow diet does not have to contribute to poor bone health.

Dark leafy greens contain calcium, as do other vegetables. If Gwyneth made sure she ate plenty of these guys, possibly with some apple cider vinegar to help make the calcium from the greens more absorbable, she would probably get more calcium. This coupled with a calcium and vitamin D supplement may have been all she needed along with one other key factor in maintaining vitamin D.

The sun! Our bodies produce vitamin D all on their own with the aid of the sun's rays. Just looking at Gwyneth's youthful (yet very pale) skin, one can see she probably doesn't spend a lot of time in the sun to get this much needed vitamin for bone health.

We all need some unprotected time in the sunlight for to ensure adequate vitamin D levels. Gwyneth might consider investing in some good after sun skincare and laying out now and again!
