Enjoy Stylish Leather Jackets For Women

By Minnie Lowery

Today, some of the finest stores in the world carry fine leather jackets for women. It didn't always used to be this way. The most famous one of these kinds of coats in history was worn by an iconic character named Fonzie on a hugely popular American TV show set in the 1950's. Back then, this kind of garment used to be associated with hoodlums and motorcycle gangs, almost exclusively. With the passage of time it became much more mainstream.

These coats go back well before the time of Fonzie. We know for certain that the Greeks used these kinds of garments in 1200 BC. Animals hides were worn even before recorded history, but leather jackets (LJ) are hides without hair, and they have been softened and colored (also called, tanned.)

The term, tanned, isn't a reference to getting color from being in the sun. It refers to getting color via the utilization of vegetable tannins, even though that method is no longer used. The earliest methods for coloring and treating hides is thought to be with the use of tree bark extracts.

Today, it's done with a chemical named chromium. Actually, it's been done that way since Abraham Lincoln was in the White House. This, of course, is the exact same White House where George W. Bush would later be known to wear a fighter pilot's LJ.

Cowhide known as top grain is the material that a lot of LJs for women are made from. The very top layer gets stripped. The rest of the material gets chemically treated. This makes it resistant to stains, scratching, sunlight and liquid.

The best material for leather jackets for women is known as, naked leather, or anlir. It is the most expensive kind you can buy. The cowhide is the cream of the crop, virtually without any blemishes whatsoever. Then it is treated in anlin, allowing it to breathe, which makes it not nearly as hot to wear. It is quite soft to the touch and able to absorb water without staining.
