Listed as being one of the greatest artists of recent times by VH1, Alicia Keys is certainly an icon when it comes to glamour and fashion. Her roles in hit movies such as Smokin' Aces, along with the promise of future projects with Disney, has all but secured her place in the spotlight as one of the most talented and prominent celebrities of the current time, as well as one of the most generous and caring when considering her charity work and philanthropic work.
The last ten years or so have been very good to Alicia Keys and that's because she's been very good to us, releasing a string of hit singles, albums, and dance tunes that have fuelled the night scene for the 00' decade and beyond. But Keys also likes to give the fashion world something to think about with her own unique sense of style that catches the photographers eyes at the events she attends.
It was at a charity event, the Keep a Child Alive Black Ball in June, where Keys was able to make a statement that she was up to date with the fashion scene. She stepped out in a resplendent shoulderless gown with a feather train, and she was even able to balance the softness of the fabric with heavy jewellery and accessories, like a spiked metal belt, showing us that she has the sense to dress well and for accessorising competently.
The singer also has a bold side, and will not shy away from going beyond the norm and the trends to be herself and wear what she finds to be comfortable. At the Fashion Shows of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, she made a unpretentious appearance in a simple white jacket, black skirt, and leggings, also choosing to do the bravest thing one can do in glamour fashion; skip the make-up. Even without cosmetics, Keys still looked every inch the fashion icon and though she was unable to go without some kind of jewellery, gold rings in this case, it was a daring statement that declared her status as a natural beauty.
Given her good sense for accessorising, it was of little surprise when Keys brought her designing ideas to the jeweller Gisle Therault, and the 2009 range that was released had the aim of bringing a little uniqueness back into jewellery and, hopefully, a little confidence for the wearer. To this end, each piece was individually designed and carries an inscription of a poem chosen to inspire the wearer. The collection, called 'The Barber's Daughter', is typical of this sweet-hearted singer who always has time to help others.
Her true favourite among accessories, however, has to be the diamond and it was this month that Keys appeared at her modestly-titled concert 'Alicia Keys and her Piano' in Paris sporting some not-so-modest items from the De Beers collection, with a necklace made of platinum and sporting over a hundred diamonds as well as matching white-gold earrings studded with diamonds, all adding to the carat-count.
Her track record for the last ten years is an impressive one, but considering how well things have gone and are going for Keys why stop? Just last June she put in many performances including one for the 2011 BET Awards and celebrated the tenth anniversary of her piano-themed album 'Songs in A Minor'; perhaps not the driving force behind her fame, but it's great to see that she remembers her roots and is still willing to pay homage to what is surely still an essential part of who she is.
But it's not all about the music, as Keys has taken on other professions such as acting and fashion designing. She is one of the lucky people who had the chance to do for a living what they were passionate about, and to be involved with many fantastic projects in a diverse range of industries. She is a multi-talented individual, and with her marriage to Swizz Beatz going strong it seems that the future is bright for Keys.
