Mid-Century Style Homes Dcor

By Luis Pezzini

Many home buyers prefer the mid-century style homes and search the market until they can find the jewel of their dreams. This style of architecture is still favored by many prospective buyers, but not as available in the market as other architectural styles. Many of these homes have gone through extensive remodeling and many have lost their original appeal. Others have been converted into mammoth homes with second levels with complete disregard of the original architectural design features.

Whether you want to obtain original pieces or reproductions to create the perfect mid-century dcor, does not matter, what is important is that the pieces that you choose convey the message that the architectural design of the home intended. Consider the space and layout of the room, and then chose a color scheme for it. The color should reflect the feel and mood that you are trying to create. Many original mid-century pieces will be found in the prevalent colors of the time; however, reproductions, or even modern pieces that go with the styles in the colors of your choice can be used. Consider different venues to obtain your pieces, online stores, flea markets, antique stores, yard and garage sales, Craig's list, eBay, and many other sites that specialize in antiques or reproductions. Other pieces that may go well are simple Scandinavian style pieces, as this style had a Scandinavian influence in the mid 20s.

Another type of dcor that goes well with mid-century style homes is the urban dcor. The sleek minimalistic approach, many times monochromatic plays well the architectural features of the home. Chrome and glass are mid-century friendly materials to use. Other great materials to use are melamine, formica, plastics, vinyl, and other functional and durable materials.

It is advisable that new homeowners live in a home for at least a year before doing any remodeling or renovations. The reason is that the owners must get to know the home, see how they flow through its space, and then realize the right changes that need to be made, maintaining the integrity of the home. Changes should be conducive to make living in it more comfortable, improve flow, and update old and worn features and fixtures. However, this is possible without destroying the identity of the home.

Many people make the mistake of over-decorating the home with all kinds of mid-century accessories; however, by doing this they defeat the purpose, as the elements of space, unobstructed flow, and minimalism are gone. Leather pieces, metal, glass, geometrical shapes, as long as they are of simple clean lines go well with this style. When looking to decorate your mid-century modern home it is a good idea to look at online pictures and familiarize yourself with the style. Even if you cannot afford original antiques of the period that have become a bit pricey, you can compromise and get some less expensive reproductions or comparable pieces.
