Understanding The Significance Of Turban Colors

Color has a certain way of communicating certain aspects of our personalities. It is one of the most powerful cues of non-verbal communication whose power goes beyond the spoken word. They represent and act as a constant reminder of certain events, memories, places, and people among other things. The specific colors we choose to be associated with in our homes and decor, cars, dressing are effective communication tools that lets the world know who we are. In the same way, turban colors symbolize certain aspects of their wearers.

Color plays a significant role in the meaning of the turban and determines what it is used for. Although the specific meaning of the color may vary depending on the religion, it can also denote the social cast of the individual. The colors symbolize events, wealth and prosperity. Another noteworthy feature besides color is the height of the headwrap which bears different meaning in regions.

It is a common headwear in many religions, particularly, Islam and Sikhism. It is fashioned from a long and slender piece of cloth and is worn on the head. This headdress is a customary headdress in many societies and is mostly worn by men. Wrapping a turban signifies the traditions, beliefs, customs and the unique personality of an individual. Most societies associated with turbans use them to uphold and preserve their culture.

These headdresses come in many colors. The ones that most people are familiar with include green, orange, black, white and navy blue. The materials used also vary resulting in the different prices that are charged. Common turban materials include cotton, fine muslin, synthetics and silk. Regardless of the material used the resulting item will always be fashionable.

In the regions where Islam is the predominant religion, the leaders in this religion are often seen dressed in white wraps placed around caps. There are people who are believed to be direct descendants of Prophet Muhammad and they are identified by the black turbans they wear. It is common to see bright colored headdresses on colorful events such as weddings and simple and dull colored ones during solemn occasions like funerals.

In these societies, wearing a turban is considered as a modest way of dressing. It portrays a number of values that are held in high regard in the society. It signifies devotion, self-respect and manhood. White and green turbans are believed to signify the color of paradise. They are worn during prayer sessions as part of keeping a religious belief that requires men to wear them during worship. There are those who believe that this act has an influence on the way in which their prayers are answered.

Navy blue and orange have certain representations in the Sikh community. They are suitable for memorial events and for religious celebrations. Pink turbans are preferred for weddings, engagements and other happy occasions. White wraps are used for the day to day purposes.

Generally, any design or color is acceptable in these societies. Most people choose to coordinate their outfit with the specific color of the turban and vice versa. Although there are turban colors that are preferred for certain occasions, there are no rules specifying what pattern or color can or cannot be worn. There are several popular favorites and common norms.
