By Kathryn Neal

If you stop a moment and look around your house, one thing should jump out at you. This is your home and all the things in it belong to you they are an actually extension of who choose to be and what you want to be. Custom cookware, glassware and flatware, all these little things make a large impression on people as does the different designer aprons you choose to wear while cooking.

Back in the early 40's and 50's many ladies would make their aprons. They were very functional and used to protect the house wife's much more expensive store dresses from different spills and tears. They also helped them to become glamorous in a moment when their husbands returned home or company came over.

Generally people are surprised to learn that this is but one aspect of this old time garb. Through out history they were used for things from military and secret society uniforms to useful protective coverings for blacksmiths and butchers. Their are even old depictions where Adam and Eve are wearing smock like items that look like aprons.

In a working environment they are typically used for protective coverings for people who are wearing them. The blacksmith's apron is typically made from heavy leather. This helps protects him from the extreme heat of his forge and the embers which could come off the metal he is working on. They also help to protect them from any hot oils they use to temper their various metals.

A butchers smock is constructed with lighter materials, historically wool and cotton were used, though synthetic fibers are being used more often recently. The basic purpose using it is to stop the butcher from getting nasty stuff on him from the creatures he is butchering. They also assist with protecting him from the abrasions and scrapes he could get from the various cutting utensils he uses.

There are some secret societies that use an apron as part of its dress garb. The most well known of these is probably the Free Masons. It is thought this form of dress dates back to the style of dress Egyptian royalty used in their day to day lives. These were thought to be the clothes that were worn by the gods themselves.

In recent times a designer apron was generally chosen by a man use with his cherished barbecuing equipment. They often have witty comments like I'm really not drunk, I'm the chef or kiss the chef. Following the same idea is the thought that while they are bought by men, they are also given to them as gifts by their family.

The basic apron has quite a history of several different types of people using them through the years. Gone are the times when only the hard working men and house wives would use them. With the renewed interest in gourmet cooking, classic designer aprons are now making a come back. They can often be found in cooking stores or on line. So now when you are looking for that meaningful gift for your special someone, nothing really beats a custom apron.
