How To Make Handmade Teddy Bears

By Vicki Diaz

Making your own dolls can save you a lot of money while ate the same time providing you with an engaging pastime. Most people think that making handmade teddy bears is such a difficult process. However, with the correct materials and a few tips, you can make a very beautiful product. Here is how.

The kind of face your teddy will have depends on how well you work on its head. Depending on the look, you want to achieve, take your time so that you come up with a fine artwork. Stuff the head firmly while ensuring that the fiber or any other material you are using is evenly spread. You can use your hand to make the kind of shape you want for the head.

For your product to look attractive, the placement of both the eyes and the ears matter a lot. Picture out the kind of doll you want to see in your bedroom and use that as a clue. It is always advisable to make references from some photos that you can get either from magazine cuttings or online. After you have come up with something, invite the opinion of someone else on how your work looks like.

Sometimes you will have to change your designs repeatedly depending on how you feel or the opinions you get. You can place eyes either further or closer to each other before placing your work somewhere for a few days. If you do feel satisfied with the look, you can change the position until you find what you need.

Try your best to get the placement of the ears right. Using a quilter pin, fix the ears you made or bought at the upper side of the head by pinning the two corners to avoid them hanging. You need to repeat the process of placing the item at a point you like within the room to find if it is looking good. When putting the ears, it is more advisable to sew them in gentle curves rather than straight lines. They should be as more natural as possible.

The size and type of nose you put in your work-in-progress greatly determines its appearance. You should research and find out the kind of nose some of the teddies you find attractive have. The internet is full of photos that should give you an idea of what you really want. There are a number of magazines that can be of great help. It is also good to be creative and just try to come up with something different.

Get some nice cloth for the end product to give it a character. If you wanted a John, make for them a necktie using one of your old clothes. If you want your teddy to be a Jane, you can make a hair ribbon for them. The best thing is that you do not need to buy anything new - a few minutes of sewing should give you a nice dress.

Perhaps, naming your doll is the last thing to do. Handmade teddy bears need not to be named immediately after they are made. You can place yours somewhere to study their character before getting them an appropriate name. In fact, they should be able to name themselves if you study them well.
