The Significance Of The Yellow Turbans In China

By Jennie Sandoval

Yellow turbans in China is of great significance, as it relates to the history of the country. Its importance revolves around the Later Han Dynasty (25-220 CE), and the fight that ended the devastation during this time. It was also the reason for division of the kingdom, due to the accumulation of a number of warlords.

During this time, the rebels wore this headdress, and this is what gave these turbans their name. Shang Jiao was the name of the rebel leader. The reason why this rebellion happened was due to the bad economic situation of a lot of peasants. Also, what made the situation worse, was that these peasants were indebted to wealthy landowners.

Since that the poorer peasants had to pay so much money, they found it very difficult to survive. They could also only occupy their properties if they worked as tenant farmers. Many had to also give up their properties to the rich in order to generate a little money. As time passed the peasants become more and more resentful of their circumstances.

They also have to serve them in so many other ways, for example, as soldiers in their small personal armies. What made matters worse was the fact that the central government became extremely weak after Emperor He passed away (r. 88-105). The government was in a total mess because there was not enough taxes being paid.

There were insufficient tax monies being received, which led to many people suffering from starvation and a variety of other problems. Bribes became a problem as well, as government officials were appointed in decidedly unfair ways. This caused the peasants to feel that they were even more unfairly treated.

Furthermore, the rebellion came about because there was absolutely no assistance for the local people during difficult times. For example, in droughts many people died of thirst and starvation. Other natural disasters caused many deaths as well. The wealthy portion of the country did nothing to help the people who were dying. The most densely populated part of the country at that time was the Julu region, and it was from here that the famous rebellion started to take effect.

Although the rebellion's success was initially doubtful, it did succeed. Its success was mainly due to the people's unwavering perseverance, as well as the fact that precise attacks were not made. The various sections of rebellious people acted on their own accord.

This ensured that each group was easy to divide. Many leaders died and so many other lives perished. However, the rebellion of the yellow turbans went on till these peasants had the life they desired. These peasants did not want to be wealthy, all they needed was to live a normal and respectful life. All they wanted was to take care of their families.
