Making An Authentic Count Dracula Costume Is Easy

By Lynn Robinson

There are many factors that go into making an authentic Count Dracula costume. To start, you need to know the weather for your area. If you're going to a party or are going trick or treating, is the party inside or out? Will it be cold or warm? Knowing these things ahead of time will really help make your costume more comfortable.

It's common sense, really. If it will be cold out, wear a long-sleeved white shirt with a collar, with thermal underwear under it. If it will be warm, wear the long-sleeved shirt with the collar, but roll the sleeves up and forget about the thermal underwear. Also wear nice black pants.

Try to get a black, dark blue, or deep red vest, at a thrift store if you don't already own one, to wear over the shirt. Next, you need a cape. Capes should be at least knee length. A cape any shorter will look ridiculous. The BEST looking cape is one that is jet black and is floor length. These can be picked up relatively cheaply at any Halloween or costume shop.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is famous for his pale face and dark eyes. So you will need to wear some makeup. My advice, powder your face with baby powder. This will start to give you a pale look, and it will also help you to remove your makeup easily when your event is over. Next, paint your face white.

Now if I were you I would not paint my neck white. Why? Because this will just rub off all over your costume and make a big mess. If you want you can add some grey circles under your eyes by mixing a little bit of black paint with the white. This will give you a more haunting dead look. Then paint a small drip of blood along your lip line to make it look as if a little blood has dripped from your mouth from your last meal.

You will also need to get yourself some vampire teeth. You CAN go the cheap route of buying those fake plastic kid's teeth, but if you really want to make your costume look real then buy those realistic eye teeth caps. They come with a substance kind of like denture glue that helps affix them to your teeth. Even the cheap caps will make it look like you really have vampire fangs.

Your hair will be a finishing touch. If you don't want to purchase a wig or dye your hair, then you should at least slick it back with water or gel. If it's long enough to tie back, do it. If you want a wig, get one with black hair and white stripes, or just all black. Slick it back like real hair. If you dye your hair, get temporary black and white spray. Spray your entire head black, and then add 2 stripes, one on each side of your head, of white color.

And in the end you can finish off your Dracula ensemble by wearing shiny black shoes, and maybe even a crimson sash. Now you're ready to fly away in your search for new victims. And if you follow the tips above and there is no way that your Count Dracula costume won't be perfect. Kids will be scared, party goers will be impressed, and young vampires will stay out of your way whenever you pass.
