Autograph Guitar: Genuine or Not ?

By Mark Turgeon

Proving the authenticity of autographed guitars can be a complicated task if you're not a memorabilia specialist. However, there are many ways to ensure the legitimacy of a signed guitar if you're not sure of how to find out yourself. The methods that will work for you will depend on your particular position in the guitar memorabilia world.

If you own an autographed guitar or other forms or autograph memorabilia and want to prove to possible buyers of your item that it is indeed genuine, there are third party autograph authenticators that you can send your item to and have them verify your item to professional exemplars and give you an opinion about the item. Besides authenticators, there are a select few music autograph dealers that are highly knowledgeable about autograph guitars and other music memorabilia items and sometime they will be able to give you advice on your item.

I am not saying a third party authenticator is perfect, because they are not. They only give you a opinion about the item saying if its genuine or not and this costs a fee, but on the other hand reputable third party authenticators issue you authenticity documentation that may be more marketable for your item.

Another way to have your item authenticated is to send it to a professional handwriting expert that deals with signatures.

Artists will sign thousands of CD's, LP's and posters in their career. These signatures usually require little effort to obtain. Getting artists to sign a guitar, on the other hand, may prove to be much more difficult.

If you aren't a record label or industry company that is selling autographed guitars for charitable reasons or contests, many artists will simply deny any requests to sign a guitar. This difficulty is outweighed by fans' desire to have that perfect piece of memorabilia, which has created a large market for fake autographs and scam artists selling nothing for thousands of dollars.

There are many fake autographs in the world and its necessary to take the proper actions and research for obtaining the authenticity and legitimacy for the special memorabilia piece you may consider purchasing. Always buy from a reputable dealer or auction house and do the research on that person to see if they are honest and have nothing to hide.

I think researching the dealer or seller is the most important key when purchasing autographs. Always look at what the dealer is selling and if it too good to be true it mostly is. An honest dealer has nothing to hide and have respect for their customers and the autograph industry.
