The Sikh Punjabi Turban And Turbans Throughout The Globe

Turbans come in a range of symbolic styles and colors and are worn by many people around the world. The styles include the Sikh Punjabi turban, Kenyan turbans, Muslim turbans, Indian turbans and many others. Turban's have been worn for thousands of years and there first recorded use was during the Byzantine era.

Turbans are also known as pagris, dastars and bulles. The turban is mainly worn by males in most cultures and they can be seen in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, North Africa and East Africa.

Most people in the western world automatically think of the Sikh turban, as many people of the Sikh religion live in the West. Sikhism originated from India as a break-off group of Hinduism. It is in many ways a mixture of Islam and Hinduism, and the religion has rejected the caste system of Hinduism. The Sikh turban is known as a dastar and it is mandatory for Sikhs to wear one.

Sikhs, as well as people from Central Asia, South Asia and the Middle East wind their turban anew with every wearing. A turban's cloth can be as much as 5 meters long. Some turbans in South Asia are permanent and placed on the head already wound. The region, religion and culture will determine the size of the turban.

The Akurinu people of Kenya also wear turbans as part of their Christian religion. They starch them so that they are white in color. These types of turbans are wound in a very distinct way that creates a sharp point on the top of the head.

The turban is an important part of the national costume in Afghanistan, and more people wear turbans here than in any other part of the globe. There are many styles and colors, but they are usually wrapped loosely and are large in size. In kabul they are smaller and more tightly wrapped. The turbans in Afghanistan are also used to tie animals, as a surface to sit on and for protections against the cold.

The pagri is the name of turbans that are worn in India. They are only worn my men. There is a range of different styles, which are Representative of the region and religion of the wearer. They come in various shapes, sizes and colors. In Indian society the pagri represents respect and honor and because of this they are given to important guests at certain ceremonies and occasions. The color of a pagri is symbolic. The white pagri is a symbol of peace and is usually worn by elder people in the community. Saffron colored pagris symbolize valor and are worn during political rallies. Pink pagri's symbolize springtime and are worn during this season and at marriage ceremonies.

Turbans are also worn by Rastafarian people, who use them to keep their dreadlocks clean and protected. As well the more well known Sikh Punjabi turban many different cultures and religions also wear them. As well as being an importunate part of religious observations they are also practical.
