A Few Pointers On Turban Tying

By Claudine MacDonald

Some tips on turban tying can be helpful for those who are new with turbans or do not wear them often. Traditionally, turbans are connected with the Sikhs and are a symbol of spirituality. In the past, the turban would only be worn by males of a high status in India; however that is no longer the case. It is, however, now required that all adults males wear a turban in India.

It is fairly easy to create a turban of your own. You will need a long piece of fabric, no shorter than three feet long and about one foot wide. It can be any color, although different colors symbolize different meanings depending on the culture and religion. These are important factors to keep in mind when selecting a color for your turban.

Rolling the fabric before you begin the process of wrapping is well advised. You will be managing a fairly long piece of material so this can make it a lot easier, especially if it is your first time. While holding one end with one hand, begin the wrapping process with the other, ensuring to always wrap diagonally.

When you start wrapping, be sure to leave a small length at the back, about a half an inch or so down your neck, this will be used at the end. As you wrap, ensure to keep flattening your fabric so there are not any bumps. In addition, make sure that it is reasonably tight as you go along.

Once almost all of the material has been used and the majority of your head has been wrapped, you will have about a foot or so of material left. Fold this in half, then take that last bit and tuck it into the top side, leave some space in the center unwrapped. This is important for the next step.

The piece of material that was left at the back will now be used. Bring it up and unfold it if it was folded. Bring it up over the uncovered area of your head and tuck it underneath the rest of the cloth. Be sure to keep it tight when you tuck it under the material.

While three feet of fabric is okay, it is important to remember that traditional turbans are sold as a large cloth, sixteen feet long and three feet wide. If you are using this you will want to fold it several times until it is four to five inches wide. If you are making your own from scratch, longer is better.

Once it has been done several times, turban tying can be quite easy and even fun. It is important to keep in mind that length and width are important when creating your own from scratch. However always remember, the main key is to keep wrapping diagonally and be sure to leave that extra bit of fabric at the back of your neck to give it that final touch.
