On January 21st, 2009, the life of a Sottish church volunteer was changed forever in just under 3 minutes. Susan Boyle, at age 47 decided the time had come to throw caution into the wind and have a crack at the hit TV show, Britains Got Talent. The day that will go down in musical history as the "Susan Boyle Audition Day" was the day Susan Boyle took to the stage and gave it her all.
As she walked on stage, many snickered, others rolled their eyes. However, when Susan belted out the first line of the Les Miserables hit "I Dreamed a Dream", jeers very quickly turned to cheers. The show stopping performance that has been viewed online on more than 120 million occasions, has taken individuals by the heart and skyrocketed her to fame. The Susan Boyle audition "was one of the most extraordinary moments of the entertainment world in 2009," quote Oprah Winfrey.
Before this though, Susan's life was anything but extraordinary.
In Susans younger years, her parents where advised not to expect a lot from the younger of their 9 children Susan, due to the fact that while Susans mother was giving birth to her, she was deprived of oxygen and developed a slight disability.
Susan describes how she struggled to fit in throughout her younger years. "I didn't make friends very easily. I couldn't trust anybody, and when I did try to speak to people, they made fun of me," she says. "So the only escape from all that, really, was music."
It had been an ongoing fantasy of Susan's to turn out to be a professional singer, but in 2007, when tradgedy struck with the passing of her mother, she stated she lost the dream of professional singing. "The loneliness truly set in, I understand that [my mom] meant me to do something with my life, however I did not know until I applied for the tv program." Susan describes.
Susan ended up running in at 2nd place to the astonishment of her loyal fans in the finally of Britain's Got Talent, but there was no stopping her album from tearing up the charts to the number one place shortly after release.
Since its release in November 2009, I Dreamed a Dream by Susan Boyle has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, making it the biggest female debut of all time! "It's astounding," Susan says in a typical Susan fashion. "It's very humbling, as well."
