Film-maker Karan Johar paves the way for a new tide of directors and actors

By Rohini Nadia

Not every film-maker pushes new talent in the limelight. And that's just what separates the heir to Dharma Productions, Karan Johar from the rest. Having successfully directed four movies over the last decade, including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998, followed by Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), and My Name Is Khan in 2010, Karan Johar has co-directed and produced films for several first-time directors. A few months ago, Karan Johar's latest production Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu was released, marking the directorial debut of Shakun Batra. Previously, Karan had debutant Karan Malhotra direct Agneepath, a retelling of the original released in 1990. The 2012 remake stars Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt. Karan Malhotra has also worked as an associate-director with Johar for the film My Name Is Khan.

Till date, Karan Johar has produced 12 films in all. Of these, 9 were directed by first-time directors, all launched by Dharma Productions. For Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), a romantic drama film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta and Jaya Bachchan, Karan roped in Nikhil Advani, who later went on to direct blockbusters like Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love (2007).

Karan Johar has introduced Tarun Mansukhani with Dostana (2008), with the sequel currently being planned. For the film Wake Up Sid (2009), Dharma Productions put debutant Ayan Mukerji on the director's seat. The Dharma Productions banner will soon unveil yet another film by its 11th new director, Akshay Roy who will call the shots for the upcoming Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

As for now, Ekta Kapoor hasn't decided just where to star Sidharth. As per reports, the producer has been drawing up plans for several movies with a host of directors and finding a good fit for the Malhotra could take a while. The producer hasn't confirmed anything as of now, and Sidharth Malhotra hasn't yet to make an official statement in regards to the same.

As for speculations of her marriage ending her career, the actress has proved the gossip untrue. She looks forward to acting working with her favorite director Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan yet again, though she insists on stronger scripts. She last featured in Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan, a film that received mixed reviews due to its story-line which was also deemed controversial by quite a few. However, for Karan Johar's upcoming release, Kajol is bound to be a crowd-puller, with fans knocking down cinema doors to get a peek at her on-screen after two long years.
