A Rap Artists and Their Must-have's

By Farah Fan

If you're looking for a job in music as one of the rap artists or copy writers, you potentially have multiple sources of income. You can make money from record income, radio stations play, merchandise, concerts, having a record played on TV, film or advertising and more. Before you get in on the action you're going to have to have a record deal. Whether you intend to begin your own record label or plan to get closed to a specific label, you might like to start by contacting some DJ's or producers, putting together a demo, getting into some freestyle contests, getting your name out on college radio, perhaps getting some gigs, essentially building some local contacts and building a buzz - which will require some work.

You will need three key advisors: A Personal Manager- Obtaining a good Personal Manager is necessary. A good PM will advise you on every aspect of your career; A Lawyer - Critical simply because they will be involved in bargaining for and constructing the deals you make. Make sure your lawyer is as knowledgeable about the music business as possible; An Agent - Your agent is in charge of booking you to the public (live shows, appearances, etc.). Your personal manager and lawyer will be able to help you in choosing an agent.

Everybody makes use of the terms "the rap music industry", "the music business", "the music industry", etc, but you may still be asking yourself - Exactly what are these people talking about? It is getting less and less realistic these days to expect to go far in the rap music business solely counting on the belief that you make good music or write great lyrics. Though in the long run, making good music is the key factor for success in the music business, a huge percentage of skilled aspiring rappers fail because they do not know the business of music.

All the horror stories you may have heard about the recording industry, how the recording industry is a corrupt machine that could care less about music top quality and is all about the dollar, they're pretty much right. Deal with it and learn how to work the system. Let us say Record Label A is struggling and requires a new artist; let us say they push rap records so they need a new rap artist. Now they send out an A&R to find their rapper, which could be a cat with mild talent or just some guy they think has a valuable gimmick. Either way they eventually find their guy.

Not all rap artists come from a dismal history, some have actually taken educational supplements such as college degrees or taken classes. In the past each individual DJ or on-air personality would need a broadcast license which they would obtain through taking instructional classes and going through an entire process. It would be like their "diploma" and you would usually see it prominently displayed in their booth. These are several of the things a rap artist will need to have, and if you want to be one, here's a tip, be gutsy.
