The first documentation of tie dye starts back in early Asia. They extracted colors from vegetation, berries, flowers, and roots. Virtually anything having color, that could be drawn from Mother Earth, would be boiled to get out the dye. After which, designers would saturate the cloth within that liquid.

Tie dying progressed over time, making its way into the United States. During the 1920s, in the Depression, it was utilized as a good cost-effective way to color materials to create both apparel and interior decor. Housewives could be found using it often.

Then, in the 60s, with the help of Woodstock and musicians such as Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and Joe Cocker, the popularity of tie dye really exploded. It showed individuality. It symbolized freedom of expression.

Through the 80s it launched a comeback. Companies started to work with it as part of their clothing collections. Engineered dyes and paints were being developed to allow for significantly less fading and prolonged wear. Manufacturers incorporated more color range, simultaneously. In addition to normal primary colors, black and white, and even pastels had been incorporated.
