Iconic Rings from Icons of Style

By Abigail Collins

You do not need to wait for the man to come and pop it on your finger to wear a ring that you will love eternally. If you find 'the one' - and by that we mean a ring - it will be the finishing touch on a perfect outfit and make your hands look ultra-glamorous.

Your hands are full of expression as you shake hands, gesticulate and greet others. So the ring is at the forefront of your appearance. There are fisherman's rings or Russian wedding rings that can symbolise your beliefs, friendship rings remind you and tell others of your loved ones, and a diamond ring is symbolic of eternal love. But on the other hand, sometimes a girl's outfit just needs a ring to be its cherry on top.

Costume jewellery these days uses a huge variety of materials. There are so many choices for any type of look; crystal, cubic zirconia, glass and semi-precious stones are all used to give the appearance of the real deal. The metals used include gold or silver plated brass, vermeil or sterling silver, but the most interesting are the ones by the more creative of the designers which are experimenting with plastics, acrylics and wood. Not only will the ring draw everyone's attention, but you won't be able to look away either.

X Factor's style queen Cheryl Cole is famous for her on-off marriage, and the press is always looking hard to see whether she's wearing her wedding ring. But while she's diverting attention from her third finger, she's been favouring diversionary tactics, such as the blood red 'skull' ring, chunky butterflies and big beautiful semi-precious stones. She's even designed her own 'promise' ring, a single solid moulded ring with the word 'promise' cut through it.

Pop princess Pixie Lott has been seen with handfuls of gothic silver, moulded bunnies and even a P3 scrabble letter made into a ring recently, demonstrating that when it comes to fashion rings, anything goes. Pixie loves crystals put together to look like diamonds, roses and ruby-coloured glass for a funky look.

Kim Kardashian has an engagement ring, from basketball luminary Kris Humphries, that's rumoured to be worth $2million! Nonetheless, Kim has been photographed still happily wearing costume jewellery, such as flashy crystals that counteract the real deal. And for those who follow Kim's style, there are great copied diamond designs sold for a margin of the price.

Over the last few decades style icons have graced the scene, making costume jewellery fashionable and famous. There was art deco, retro and now today's modern take on jewellery. In today's world, you can have a one-of-a-kind personalised ring, or select from a series of mass produced rings that groups of friends can buy together and unite in style. Or there are copies of rings made famous by style icons, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Coco Chanel or the Duchess of Windsor. If you're a lover of Royal fashion, copies of Princess Diana's famous engagement ring are available for the same price as a slightly expensive lunch!

You can be your own fashion icon and do not need to copy anyone else, so embrace the individuality trend that Cheryl, Kim and Pixie have taken upon themselves and accessorise in a way that will show exactly who you are, and stand out from the crowd.
