Many people the world over love to play soccer, with all of its tricks and footwork it is really an exciting game to play and watch.
There are so many people that have tried to emulate the great players and go on to make a professional career in this game. Unfortunately it is not as easy as it looks to be able to do just that.
Here are a select few individuals that manage to carve out a career and become famous at the same time:
Edison Arantes Pele definitely needs no introduction. He was only 15 years old when he broke into the Brazilian world cup squad and managed to play as well as score two goals. Another of his claims to fame was to be named Athlete of the Century by the Olympic committee.
Pele had a wonderful 25 year playing career that produced around 1000 goals to his name. He was also selected as being one of the top 100 most influential sportspeople of the twentieth Century according to Time magazine.
Another player that was well noted for his craft and guile on the soccer pitch was the Argentine playmaker and scorer of great goals Diego Maradona.
Maradona also played for over a quarter of a century, 26 years to be exact and in this time he was well known for his attributes on the field of play. As it turned out he was also known for his indiscretions off the pitch as well.
Bulgaria's answer to the complete soccer player was Hristo Stoichkov. From his humble beginnings playing for CSKA Sofia he soon hit the highlights with FC Barcelona with whom he won the Spanish title. His playing style certainly gave him fame and fortune but since he retired in 2003 he seems to have left the game behind.
Last but not least there is David Beckham. This man managed to represent his country of England in three world cups. David Beckham started his professional career aged just 16 and within 5 years he was playing for Manchester United and winning all before him. The pinnacle of David Beckham's career had to be captaining his country in the world cup of 2006.
