Perhaps the largest Native American tribe in the USA, the Navajo people can be found in the southwestern area. Although they have embraced the modern world in many ways, the tribe has also managed to hold onto many of their traditions and customs. The group are known to be excellent craftsmen, and Navajo jewelry is famous the world over for its stunning designs.

Silver is a popular material among the Native Americans, and the Navajo people boast several talented silversmiths. Silver is used to create a wide range of products, from rings and earrings to bracelets and necklaces. Pieces vary from the small and delicate to large and impressive, and bear impressively unusual designs.

The tribal people are famous for their matchless squash blossom design. Noted towards the end of the nineteenth century, this style is believed to have been influenced by Mexican designs. The design is featured in necklaces and uses special beads that are clustered together to resemble the shape of the pomegranate fruit.

Turquoise features in a wide range of pieces, and is often set into silver bracelets and earrings. The technique of inserting turquoise into pieces was developed towards the end of the nineteenth century and has been used ever since. Artisans are also famed for creating pieces from materials such as leather, wood and even stone. These materials are often made into the shapes of spirit animals such as eagles as well as dream catchers and crosses. Beads, which come in a broad spectrum of colors, also often feature in the designs.

Traditionally, Native American trinkets were created to mark special occasions such as ceremonies, and is often presented to tribe members during events. The unique designs have become popular souvenir items among tourists. These days they can often be bought from tribe people or in a large number of retail outlets all over the world.
