The pages of both tabloid and broadsheet newspapers are very often filled with images of footballers who have been in car accidents while driving their expensive cars. Because such stories so often make the headlines they provoke an adverse reaction from the public who question the driving ability of footballers and whether they should be allowed to drive such cars as well as making less constructive criticisms at times too.
There are lots of different possibilities as to why it appears that football players are so often involved in car accidents. One option which is possible is that footballers don't pay attention as much as they should or drive at safe speeds like everyone else. Most high level footballers are on extremely high wages and with that comes the possibility of them being less careful than they would had they had to save for years for their car.
Another reason could be because men are believed to be more likely to have an accident and more specifically men between 17 and 35. Coincidentally most premier league and championship footballers fall into this age range with only a small percentage outside of it. A young and inexperienced driver in a very powerful car obviously increases the chance of an accident occurring too.
These possibilities are however very critical of footballers and there are other reasons which could be true. A large percentage of the British population like to read about such incidents and so news establishments are more likely to write about them. They are quick to write about and an image of a crashed supercar catches the attention of the reader, especially when coupled with a high profile footballer's name.
There isn't any evidence that footballers do crash often either and so they might correlate with the figures of other men of similar ages. The difference is that newspapers will write about a big named footballer crashing his Ferrari or Mercedes every time whereas they will never write about someone in a regular job writing off their Vauxhall Astra.
