Find Out More About The History Of Today's Designer Aprons

By Andrea Rivas

You may have memories of the apron your grandmother and other elderly relatives used to wear years ago. In fact, they may still have some in that back of a cupboard and may not have seen the light of day for some time. Maybe it is time to dig them out and see how they compare to the stylish designer aprons that are around today.

The women in the house, of all ages, wore these items of protective clothing around the house and kitchen. These protective covers were tied around the waist and covered and protected the skirt portion of their clothing from dirt and dust. Many were hand-made from spare pieces of cloth or old clothing. The style was similar to the ones that can be purchased today.

These clothes were intended to be functional, and if they happened to look quite decorative that was a bonus. The majority of women if they were fairly well of, had perhaps one dress for Sunday wear and only one or two for everyday wear. They would wear their oldest clothing when doing the housework, but they still had to protect it by wearing their apron.

Modern clothing covers are intended to be practical and stylish. They do help to protect your clothing, but can also be used to project a theme. You are not restricted to the waist apron; you can use the full one which is designed with a bib panel to cover the top half of the body.

If you visit old-fashioned tearooms and restaurants, you will often see staff wearing replicas of vintage designs. Even in the more modern establishments staff wear them and it seems to create a more professional and somewhat comforting appeal. You may subconsciously associate an apron to warm childhood memories.

When you are clothes shopping you are bound to come across a wide variety of designer aprons. They have become very popular gifts because they are functional but fun. Even the men in your life might appreciate one as a fun gift.
