Hugh Hefner's rise to fame

At a quite early age, Hugh Hefner was inside the publishing industry. Although in highschool, he wrote content and illustrations for that school paper. He then started out his own personal publication referred to as Shudder, which centered on quick tales, comic strips, and book and motion picture opinions. On graduating, Hefner joined up with the U.S. Military and was set to work being a clerk where he put in the subsequent two yrs.

When he eventually left the armed service, Hefner attempted to satisfy his love and locate a position in publishing. He was, nonetheless, not able to get employed to be a reporter and his thought of marketing a comic strip called 'Fred Frat' about college pupil daily life was also turned down.

Not willing to let his dream job pass him by, Heffner continued searching and eventually landed a position with Esquire magazine where he learned the ins and outs of publishing and marketing a magazine. Unfortunately, Esquire decided to move to New york and closed down in Chicago, leaving Heffner once again unemployed.

Hefner's intuition told him that there was an opportunity to be had in publishing a magazine for men that focused on sex. His plan was to publish pictures of nude women - a move which had not been widely attempted for fear of being prosecuted for the distribution of obscene material through the U.S. mail. Hefner was not concerned about the legal implications and had a big plan to get the word out about his magazine.

Before she became famous, Marilyn Monroe posed nude for a calendar photo. Everyone in the publishing world knew about the picture but no one dared print it because of the legal risks. Hefner decided that he would take the risk and use the picture for the inaugural edition of his new magazine, Playboy in December of 1953.

At 27 yrs of age, having a startup financial commitment of just $600 plus some credit from his printing business, Hefner went to get the job done. The very first issue marketed for fifty cents each and had a press run of 53,991. The whole issue was rapidly sold out providing evidence to Hefner's marketplace possibility prediction. The rest is history, the magazine has kept growing since then.

With a profitable magazine flourishing for him, Hefner decided to expand his business into other areas. Two of his more successful ventures were Playboy Clubs, a chain of nightclubs, and a number of London casinos.

In 1988, Hefner handed down the reigns of the enterprise over to his child, Christie who turned the enterprise about. Christie modified the main focus in the publication, which would now include a lot more written content on style and home entertainment. Furthermore, she introduced Playboy Television as well as a pay for each use Site. By means of Playboy, Hefner challenged the principles and social norms and modified the way in which sexual intercourse was viewed in The USA.

Today, Playboy is the leading adult mens magazine in the world and with women like Kendra Wilkinson, Holly Madison and Kim Kardashian appearing in it's pages, that is likely to continue for some time yet!
