Cinnamon Challenge Fun

By Russell Acker

-What is the cinnamon challenge

The cinnamon challenge is a popular game that has been circulating around the internet for over ten years. The challenge is simple, in theory. A person attempting the cinnamon challenge must record themselves swallowing a spoonful of cinnamon in under sixty seconds without the aid of any liquids. It sounds like it should be easy, but even so, every video of someone attempting the cinnamon challenge ends with the challenger coughing up clouds of cinnamon.

-Where did it come from

The first time the cinnamon challenge was documented on the internet was in 2001 on the blog of Michael Buffington, who dared his friend Erik Goodlad to try the challenge. His attempt at the challenge was recorded in the form of still pictures and written descriptions of the events. The challenge then gained popularity in the video sharing community five years later in 2006, and has been growing in popularity ever since, with thousands of users uploading videos of themselves attempting the challenge. The cinnamon challenge had a recent spike in popularity at the end of 2011, prompting a new wave of daring internet users to attempt the seemingly impossible.

-Why do the challengers always seem to react so violently to the cinnamon

Part of the beauty of the cinnamon challenge is that swallowing a spoonful of cinnamon doesn't at first glance seem like it would be such a difficult thing to do. After all, cinnamon tastes good. We put it in our desserts. More cinnamon should be a good thing, right

As it turns out, no. The reason that cinnamon is good in desserts is that when we're eating it in dessert form, we're ingesting a relatively small amount of cinnamon per bite. Cinnamon dries out the mouth, and in large quantities, such as the teaspoon amount required for the cinnamon challenge, the cinnamon causes a burning sensation, making it nearly impossible to swallow.

-Is it dangerous

Attempting the cinnamon challenge is certainly uncomfortable, but in some cases, it can cause physical harm. Erik Goodlad, the first person known to attempt the challenge, suffered a nosebleed during the challenge as a result of exhaling a cloud of cinnamon through his nose. The most common danger of the cinnamon challenge, however, is the potential of inhaling the cinnamon while coughing. This, while not likely to cause permanent damage, can still be quite painful.

-So, why do people do it

People do the cinnamon challenge for the same reason they would attempt to drink a gallon of milk in one sitting, or try to do a backflip on their bike, or hold their breath for as long as they can. They want to accomplish something that few others have. The cinnamon challenge is just that, a challenge. It inspires the people of the internet to triumph where others have failed. And, if it doesn't work out, they'll still have a video that will receive a great amount of views and comments.
