Tattoo Designs

By Owen Jones

If you have never been into a tattoo artist's studio, you would be surprised. Tattooing has a very sordid reputation, but that is because of its connection previously with tattooists on the dock or in prison. It is not like that any more. Tattooists are called tattoo artists and their place of work is known as a tattoo studio, like an artist's studio.

This is because most tattoo artists are artists in their own right. They are able to frequently draw on other surfaces than humans too. Many can paint or draw on canvas or paper. However, most customers prefer to either look through the tattooist's catalogue of images or go to a website from which they can download a picture of their choice.

Some web sites have as many as 10,000 traditional and contemporary images. In fact, going on line is probably the best way of acquiring your tattoo picture, because the old ones are being revised all the time.

But, if you choose from a tattoo studio's catalogue, you will almost certainly see your tattoo on someone else too, whereas if you download one from the Net, the chances of seeing it on someone else are much smaller. However, if you go to a good tattooist, you need only describe what you would like and it will be copied to your skin.

Having said that, some people like to have duplicate tattoo images, because the picture has been made well-known by a celebrity. Besides the celebrity look-alike imitations there are also numerous tribal tattoos. Native American artwork is very popular in North America and Thai and Korean traditional tattoos are popular everywhere.

Other popular commonplace tattoos denote membership of a club or a gang. For example, many men who have spent time in Cardiff Prison tattoo themselves with the picture of a bluebird on their thumb, but the bluebird is also the emblem of Cardiff City Football Club. The tattoo can also be found frequently on the neck. Sailors also often have comparable tattoos.

Signs of the Zodiac are also fairly common and the zodiacal images are quite standardized, but the likelihood of seeing yours on someone else is much less that one-in-twelve. Dragons are also ubiquitous even if it is only on the skin. At one time, dragon tattoos were just worn by men, but nowadays women wear them almost as frequently

Religious and Celtic symbols are very popular too. Crosses, Celtic Crosses, the Star of David and others can be seen frequently. Then there are the tattoos that are more the province of women, but not completely so. These include complex designs, flowers, birds, dolphins, butterflies and cherries.

It is a good thing that the boundaries between what are male and what are female tattoos are blurring, but they have not yet disappeared altogether by any means. Not many women wear tattoos of anchors, knives, 'LOVE and HATE', 'MUM and DAD' on their knuckles or naked men on their arms, but who knows, it may yet come, or not?
