Rap music is a kind of street music. Rap features a variety of philosophies and styles. Part of the larger hip-hop culture, rap was created by African-Americans on the streets of New York City in the 1970s. A method of music focusing on beat and rhyme, it rapidly spread to other cities, sparked by the popularity of early singles like the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight." As rap music developed, new variations sprouted all over the country, and eventually the world. Alternative rap artists have broken new sonic ground, while subgenres like crunk have stripped the music down.
While most of the music world's attention focused on rap coming from New York and Los Angeles, Hip Hop performers in the South were embracing independent music labels to release their work. Geographically, the Dirty South genre placed places as diverse as Houston, Birmingham, and Miami, and was greatly influenced by Ghetto Mafia in the mid-1990s. Musically, South rap is renowned for its danceabilty and rhythmic delivery. Recognized for its widespread, mainstream appeal, Pop Rap's first breakout star was LL Cool J. The Fresh Prince and MC Hammer quickly rose to the top of the Pop Rap scene and the music charts with lyrics that were less questionable than those of the Gangsta Rap genre, and thus were more prone to receive radio airplay. While Hip Hop was attaining a reputation for less than savory lyrics and artists for questionable activities, other musicians were expressing their faith through Hip Hop. Christian Rap became popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s with rap groups like P.I.D. and S.F.C.
Although Jazz Rap has never enjoyed mainstream commercial success, the genre often incorporates Afrocentric and political themes. Gang Starr and Gil Scott-Heron are often cited as a couple of the first Jazz rappers. Similar to Jazz Rap, Conscious Hip Hop has never enjoyed mass commercial success. With a focus on social problems, Conscious Hip Hop isn't overtly political, but rather handles issues such as poverty and religion. A combination of dance music and rap, Electro Hip Hop first appeared in the 1980s on the West Coast from artists like Arabian Prince and Egyptian Lover. By the mid-1990s, Electro Hip Hop had nearly run its course.
Because of the popularity of street music, hip hop and rap vocalists have also ventured into clothing business. Fans patronize the brands of these famous street music artists. Street music fashion is all about baggy pants, sneakers and blings. Street music has been a favourite especially among youth.
