By Farah Fan

Street music has changed into a popular music style. Street music including rap music is surely an art form. Hip hop music too has come a long way and ought to be renowned for the art it's become. The influence of street music is seen even on fashion. Gangster rap is, at present, ruling the charts.

Individuals have different ideas about the origin of rap music. In order to understand Rap music, one has to come to understand exactly what is called the Hip Hop culture. Rap is a very important area of the evolution of this Hip Hop culture. Besides music, Rap contains graffiti, break dancing, new attitudes, and a unique style of clothing. The foundation of the Hip Hop culture was centered in the Bronx in New York City. Rap was the result of frustration in African-American people in the 1970s. This musical genre was born in the crime-ridden communities of West Bronx, which later dispersed to South Bronx and all over the world.

Maybe even even more important, American Rap music was extremely affected by Jamaican music. Before taking a look at rap music in the United States, music in Jamaica needs to be looked at first. Jamaican music held a large effect on American Rap music and it's creation in the early seventies. Styles of Jamaican music that should be looked at are "toasting" and "Dub" music.

Toasting was usually done at "Blues Dances", these functions were regular in the Jamaican ghettos and there they performed American R&B, a mode of music brought to them by Black American sailors stationed on the island. With the increasing demand for R&B and the absence of a band on the island that could play this type of music, Jamaicans modified and produced sound systems. These large arrangements were composed of Disk Jockeys (DJ), bouncers, and engineers; they were portable nightclubs or discos that were put in place.

Rap is really distinct from other genres of music. The most differentiating characteristic of rap music is the very fast, yet rhythmically spoken words and phrases. These "rapped" words are then recorded over the background music that always includes some sort of bass and many keyboard sounds. The absence of musical instruments in most rap songs differentiates it even further from the other types of music. Yet one of the prime characterizations of rap music lies within the music's lyrics.

Many rap performers and their fans consider street music and rap to be an "expression of themselves" and that the words should not be taken literally. In fact a number of them can relate to the ideas and opinions of the rap artists. Yet most rap music can be considered very controversial in today's culture. Artists typically show a comprehensive familiarity with their subject material and to rap efficiently, one has to examine what they are saying. Effective rap performers have been able to bring about some emotive components in their act. This is vital for connecting with the audience. They rap about topics that they are familiar with and build their vocabulary in subjects about which they would like to rap.
