Are Magazines & Celebrity Culture Bad For Our Health?

By Geraldine Hackett

These days ' folk are heavily influenced by popular culture. Teeth whitening used to be one of the extremities of Hollywood actors and actresses. Now this has pervaded through every corner of society. Hollywood's influences don't stop there neither. I am living in Eire and girls I know in my area below the age of 20 have had boob jobs.

My doctors surgery also now perform botox treatments. How soon until they are offering face lifts for all? Why I presumed, are we all scared of looking old? Irrespective of what your perspectives are on aging, it is a natural activity. Many of us are afraid to embrace it though. It is not a disease it's a normal part of life.

Just look at Jordan or all of the other frightful looking celebrities who have overdosed on botox and cosmetic surgery even in their 20's and 30's. If they suspected they would cheat ageing by having surgery at such a young age, what will they not look like in their 50's? Right now they look like freaks.

Cosmetic surgery is fools gold. You can always tell when a person has got it done. They look so plastic, and if they have over dosed they've a gormless expression. Look at all the celebrities who've "trout simper" lips and plastic foreheads. I'd rather be able to show my expressions with 1,000 wrinkles than look like a scarecrow.

The pressure to look great all the time now is gigantic. Young girls can only too fast get cosmetic surgery with no detailed or mental assessments. Many also travel to dubious cosmetic hospitals as they're less expensive and finish up with a bungled operation. Surgery is risky. If it goes belly up you'll have to go through several more painful operations and take extra recovery time out to rectify the situation, if it can be rectified. Are you able to afford to take time out from your office marketing job? Will your headmistress let you take a job break? Will your bank crib pick up the tab?

You ask any burns or skin graft patient going for their 50th operation if they like cosmetic surgery. And folks are cueing up for it in the name of looks. Take care who you look to for inspiration. Don't get your self confidence from Hollywood or celebrity culture. Beauty is only skin deep. If somebody doesn't like you for your looks they are not worth knowing. If you change yourself they will only like the cosmetic you, and not the genuine person.
