Emerging Styles Of Islamic Clothing Fashion Abaya

By Elena McDowell

More than a traditional garment of Islamic clothing fashion Abaya, the garb has become a fashion statement. Contemporary Islamic women looking for a way to show their individual tastes are embracing new styles. Creative Emerati women designers are major participants in this new trend. This fresh spirit is also being introduced to Saudi Arabian ladies.

Similar to the burqa, it is not the same attire with a different name. A burqa is a South Asian garment covering the body completely in one piece of fabric. A piece of netted material allows a person to look out. Abayas loosely cover bodies from the neck to the feet. The addition of veils and headscarves provides further coverage to an extent similar to burqas. The Niqab can be made from fabric or a plastic material.

This customary type of clothing is native to the Gulf region. Bedouin cultural toots are reflected in this garb. Black has been typical in the Emirates, but other shades are normal for natives of other Gulf countries. Locals can distinguish the national origin of Abaya wearers from the styling. Originally, it was sold cut from one piece and designed to cover the entire body. Its present structure consists of more than one piece of cloth. The wealth of its wearer can be discerned from the quality of fabric and decorative trimmings.

The changes in Emirati fashions should not be surprising. The Emirates are a major hub of western tourists and workers and Emirati women travel abroad. It is natural a new generation of designers wants to improve on its customary form to reflect the changing times. Their creative expressions remain respectful of local culture and religious norms. But, without vice police that is an inhibiting factor in Saudi Arabia, a new market has developed.

It is only recently that women living in the Emirates have become more comfortable wearing new fashions outside their homes. Earlier, they would only wear traditional style in public. But, new designers are encouraging them to be more adventurous. A variety of designs, materials and adornments are refreshing traditional wear. Fashionable ladies can try a variety of styles. Bringing beauty to an austere garb is also making new customers of South Asian Burqa wearers.

Changes are also coming to conservative Saudi Arabia. Saudi fashion designer Eman Al-Mandeel is one of several adventurous faces. She was inspired by living in Dubai and is leading evolution of traditional wear at home. Colorful additions, different fabrics and decorations are allowing Saudi women to display their individuality. They are replacing the formal anonymity of traditional black, at least in private.

But, change is slow. Riyadh demonstrates the austerity of accepted custom remains a preference. Any ornamental elements are only subtle embellishments. The sway of religious police maintains the pubic norm is standard attire. But, privately women are trying on new creations. Emerging designs are bringing a modern twist to their customary form of clothing.

New talents are expanding the possibilities for this dress by developing a range of styles for different occasions. Some are even bolder and experiment with innovative material such as fabric made from bamboo. They are giving a contemporary twist to traditional wear and taking it to new heights for adventurous customers. A modernizing spirit is merging religious and cultural customs with current style in Islamic clothing fashion Abaya trends.
