General Information On Hair Coloring

By Irma Farrell

Hair coloring is used when referencing the intentional changing of hair color. This is usually done for cosmetic purposes. Many use it to cover up gray, restore their original color that has changed from different process, or to stay up with what they desire or is fashionable at the time. This kind of dying has been done for many years and involves the use of many chemical compounds.

Dying is popular nowadays, particularly in the United States of America. In fact, it is believed that more than three-fourths the population of women do this to their locks. Coloring can be professionally done by cosmetologist and hairdressers or by individuals using special kits purchased from the store.

Historically, coloring was only done all over, in just one color. It is more common in modern times for multiple colors, gradations and streaks to be used on top of a natural or base color. The techniques are also known as highlighting or lowlighting. Highlighting involves the application of lighteners, while lowlighting uses dark dyes.

There are numerous techniques that might be employed during this practice too. The various methods might impact the end results. Foiling involves using plastic film or foil to separate hair that is colored. This is particularly useful when it comes to applying multiple colors. A plastic cap may be employed, this fits around the head and strands are then pulled out using a hook. Balayage, dip-dying and tipping all involve direct application of the dye onto strands without foil. All such methods can be used for any color of dye.

Semi-permanent, permanent, temporary and demi-permanent are the key categorizations used for coloring. Permanent is common and often includes oxidation dyes. Demi-permanent is similar but utilizes alkaline components that are not the same as ammonia. These are not used to make hair lighter but cause less damage locks than permanent methods. They are also known to be more effective at covering gray than semi types.

The semi types only penetrate the shaft partially. Because of this, the color is able to last for more than one wash. Usually it will hold for four or five washes or a couple of weeks. These types of dyes include little developer, peroxide, ammonia, or none at all. They are considered safer for damaged or fragile locks.

Temporary colors are available in many different forms, including sprays, rinses, gels, foams and shampoos. Typically the coloring is more bright and vibrant than other dyes. Many people use this for Halloween, costumes or other special occasions. The pigment molecules found in the dyes are too large to penetrate cuticle layers. Instead, particles of the color stay in the shaft and are removed within one or two shampoos.

Hair coloring is a popular practice, especially in the United States. It is done by males and females, of varying ages. This process involves changing the color of the locks. It can be done through use of different methods and dyes, which may be classified as demi-permanent, temporary, permanent or semi-permanent. Professionals might color the hair or individuals can use a kit to do it.
