Places To Buy And Rent Civil War Gowns

By Lucile Jacobs

When most people think of Civil War Gowns, the gowns are either full-figured, tight or large circular skirts with hoops and petticoats. It is this design which is most often featured as Civil War memorabilia in a number of costume and textile shops. Whereas, there were a number of different styles which women wore during the 1850s, 60s and beyond.

One might question why someone would want to study specifics of clothing worn during a specific time in history. This is because different clothing worn at the time often posed different meanings or warnings. As a result, there is now an increased interest in learning more about the war, the clothing and any and all weapons used during the war.

In addition, there are a number of other dresses and artifacts which can be found at the University of Connecticut. A reality which only came about after a diplomat viewed some of the dresses on display at a local textile and costume shop. After which, school officials were solicited to obtain some of the gowns and other objects for a public collection.

The collection first made its way to the university, then on to an exhibit at the Capitol. An exhibit in which a statue of the governor during the Civil War, presided over the historic scene. A governor who some say still haunts the Capitol halls on regular basis. Although, while there have been a number of first hand reports of such ghostly sightings, there are also still a number of skeptics.

Also, while there have been many replicas and period pieces redesigned over the years, it is often rare to locate a real Civil War gown outside a museum collection. If so, then it is often advised that the individual contact a representative from a museum dealing in Civil War relics. Now, whether or not the individual chooses to do so is something which one must decide for oneself.

In addition, different styles of dresses along with hoop size often carried some meaning. For example, one might wear a specific dress when shopping, another when dining out and still another when seeking medical attention. Of course, wearing darker colors to funerals and lighter ones to weddings are trends which are still thought of as common today.

It is believed by statements of university staff that most often those studying these artifacts and clothing are from the Northeast or scholars looking to build a thesis based on the period. Regardless, these dresses are going to prove useful to researchers for quite some time. So, whether from Northeast, a historian performing Independent Study or other individual interested in the mid-1800s to early 1900s, these dresses and gowns can often provide a great deal of first hand detail in relation to the period.

Last but not least, there have also been exhibits at the university in which these Civil War Gowns and other clothing from the period have been on display either on a limited or long term basis. One of these exhibits was held at a local museum of art which focused on clothing for women during the period and into the early 1900s. After which, styles began to change based on both comfort and usability.
