Civil War Gowns Of Elegant Styles

By Shari Swanson

Women wore several layers of material back during the time of the Civil War that made up the complete ensemble each day. At all times being appropriately covered up was important regardless of the surrounding conditions. These garments were highly fashionable and certainly demanded attention, they were very elegant Civil War gowns.

The gown provided a unique purpose for each layer of material. The pantalets or bloomers were worn first which would provide the most comfort. The length of material would depend solely on the age of the woman. If the woman were of an older age, her bloomers would reach down toward her ankles.

The chemise that was worn next was designed to prevent a woman's body oils from saturating the corset. The chemise provided additional comfort and support that helped avoid restricting and pinching a woman skin. This part of the attire was beneficial in many ways.

Corsets were worn next, and provided most of the body's support. This was an important part of the ensemble because it created a beautiful smooth transition from the bust to the waist. These Corsets were made from cotton and whale bones, the corset was indeed an essential piece of the gowns.

The fourth layer consisted of a camisole, which thwarted off all possible colors rubbing off onto the corset. Since a corset was so difficult to launder it was imperative to keep it as clean as possible. Next, a woman's petticoat. This was worn to provide modesty and comfort.

Lastly, a hoop skirt and over petticoats would be worn before the actual dress would be put on. Highly vibrant Civil War Gowns made with fine linens would indeed prove a woman's place in society. The patterns and colors of the material were very radiant and exquisite making it impossible to be noticed.
