Important Information To Know About Gemstones.

By Lois Gordon

Gemstones are very high valued stones that are gotten as minerals and later cut and polished to come up with jewelry and ornaments. They exist in small deposits around the world hence are very rare and thus very expensive. Such rarity keeps their preciousness and worth. Their demand is somewhat abnormal because the demand tends to fall if the price falls.

They are mined but it is possible to find some that are not necessarily minerals but are classified in the same way because of their quality luster. Currently the most valued stones are diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald. Most people may be interested in buying but are not well aware of how the market operates.

First someone needs to understand how the gemstones are valued and graded to finally come up with the price. One example is where gemologists use the color, cut, clarity and carats. The color and luster of the stone is first given priority followed by the cut that is size and shape.

Clarity may be important to colorless gems. Carats are used to classify the stones on the basis of the most dominant chemical formula. Every dealer in the business has useful information on the classification which they can share with you.

Dealers who sell their pieces of jewelry illegally are the ones to avoid. You should also have some basic knowledge to help distinguish between fake and real jewelry. Avoid buying something because some trader has offered it cheaply to you.

Gemstones usually attract thieves because they are expensive and can make good money when resold. They should therefore be worn only when necessary and not always especially when passing areas that have high crime rates. You are advised to buy what you can afford and not what costs more than you could afford just for show off.
