How The Catwalks Are Presenting The Designer Abaya

By Sheila Sheppard

These days, when one says chic, one thinks of the designer abaya. Those who once shunned this traditional gear have introduced it into their wardrobes to suit fashion demand. Always unpretentious, it is now ranked among the highest fashion trends.

A few of the fashion capitals have presented the garment on their runways. Because of its appearance at important London events, women to whom the tradition was once meaningless are demanding it highly. The abaya has been reborn in a more stunning and colorful way than ever before.

When it comes to variety, there's no shortage. Fabrics are diverse, as are prices. There are satin ones for night and terrycloth ones to follow a bath with. There's flowing, or sleek. While retail stores are granting fair prices, designers are requiring considerable investment and only a rare few can afford them. The most high end of them is custom made and almost impossible to afford.

The runway is seeing modernity as key, with inspired elements granting style. Exaggerated sleeves widen impossibly and strikingly. Color has entered the frey with bright prints and stitching strategically placed. These details are less obvious in evening wear, where black is the color to be seen in, as long as it has muted details.

Traditional Japanese style dominated Dubai fashion week last year. Make up and hair was influenced strongly by the style of the geisha. The ever present wide sash completed the look. Chiffon and velvet were seen most often.

This garment is increasingly being adopted by the western world. Ready made versions available in malls are preferred by this market because the prices are far lower here. Primarily, though, the gulf is where most are sold.

Due to the inclusion of the designer abaya in couture collections, individuality has become possible. Its inclusion in ones wardrobe has become considered a fashion statement. Whether shopping online, by catalog or by appointment, you're sure to find one for every occasion.
