More often than not, children want to be like their favorite hip hop artist, they would like to sing and dance just like their number one hip hop artist. This is why most children who are a big fan of hip hop music usually ask their parents whether they can be enrolled in a hip hop dance class. This gives the chance to mimic a hip hop artist of their choice. Hip hop has evolved from mostly an underground street dancing style of the 1970s and has developed into the most popular dance craze in the United States, embraced by men and women of all ages. Where hip hop used to be primarily self-taught, today most dance studios offer some variation of hip hop dance in classes for children.

Over the years, hip hop terminology has been developed for particular types of hip hop moves such as the Harlem shake, krumping, two-stepping, grinding, booty popping, b-boying, locking, popping, break dancing and street. The kind of hip hop dance taught will largely depend on the teacher, but most dance school hip hop classes focus on "new style hip hop," which is a blend of dance styles like jazz-funk or lyrical hip hop. Most dance class teachers are also trained in other styles of dance such as ballet, jazz and even ballroom.

Dance camps teach various forms and styles of dance including jazz, ballet and hip hop. Dance camps in cater to different age groups and expertise levels. While many offer classes all year long, some are only offered during the summer months. Many dance camps offer hip hop as part of their curriculum for kids ranging in age from 12 to 19. There are a lot of dance camps available in the United States such as George University, Ohio State University, Pearl Studios in New York City, UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Massachusetts and Webster University.

If you do not possess the time or resources to enroll your kid to a dance studio, you can purchase DVDs or video of their favorite hip hop artist. You can also decide if you will buy a 30 minutes or 1 hour of dancing video. Many DVDs and videos are available that were developed to teach hip hop dance moves to children. You can visit your local department store or utilize the Internet to look for sites that offer hip hop dance lessons.
