Las Vegas began its history as a city with the sole purpose of providing recreation for the masses. Today, that is still true as musicians, artists, actors, and athletes all make their appearance on various stages in the city. Many of those entertainers significantly contributed to the history of Las Vegas, and even made it their home. Here are is a short list of notable people who made their mark on the strip over the last century.
Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel
A list of people who made an indelible mark on Las Vegas is not complete without mentioning Bugsy Siegel. Growing up in New York, he befriended a boy in his neighborhood, who would later be responsible for the creation of the most notorious period of mob history in the 20th century: Charles "Lucky" Luciano. It was Lucky that got Bugsy into the mafia way of life, but by the time he was in his thirties, Bugsy was yearning to live the life of a straight man. Las Vegas provided the opportunity through the creation of the Flamingo hotel and casino. The venture collapsed, and ultimately was the reason for his murder in 1947, but Bugsy Siegel had become one of the most famous people in the history of Las Vegas.
Wayne Newton
It can be said that Wayne Newton is synonymous with Las Vegas and for good reason. The entertainer has performed over 30,000 solo shows in Las Vegas. Although he was born in Virginia, Wayne Newton has made his home in Las Vegas and now owns several properties, including a ranch. At the age of 68, he continues to perform regular shows in casinos around Las Vegas.
Ike and Tina Turner
The tumultuous relationship between Ike and Tina Turner is well known however Las Vegas is where Tina found a foothold in the music industry. After leaving Ike in 1976, Tina did regular shows in Las Vegas and the UK, which eventually built up her following as a solo artist. In 1984, Tina Turner made an incredible comeback with her Private Dancer album and went on to become a bigger success than with Ike and the Revues. Las Vegas will always be a place where Tina will credit her start in music history.
The Rat Pack
Another name synonymous with Las Vegas, the Rat Pack, originally centered around Humphrey Bogart, took on different members of the entertainment industry after his death. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop appeared together on Las Vegas stages, performing songs and comedic narratives. They even played in several films as a group such as the original Ocean's 11.
Celine Dion
A French-Canadian musician, Celine Dion has become the latest big name to dominate the entertainment industry in Las Vegas. She began a three year contract to appear at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in 2002 and has never looked back. Surely by the time Celine Dion has reached retirement age, her name will also be closely tied with Las Vegas.
Liberace
Born in Wisconsin and trained as a concert pianist, it was only a matter of time before Wladziu Valentino Liberace would find fame. His musical talent and flamboyant flair for entertaining made him an easy fit for a Las Vegas show. He mad his first appearance in 1944 at the Persian Room. The media was there and deemed Liberace "a cross between Cary Grant and Robert Alda" and his performances "made like Chopin one minute and then turned into Chico Marx the next."
Las Vegas is town not for the weak of heart. It has glitz and pomp that can be infectious, but also a little overwhelming if you are not used to it. The above entertainers were all about using the extroverted personality of the city in their favor, and ultimately succeeded because of it. Now, because of these pioneers in entertainment, the Las Vegas strip has a history as rich as New York, but with copious amounts of flair.
