The Most Popular Sunglasses Styles for 2011

By Stephen Daniels

Many of the most popular sunglass styles for 2011 are so old they look like new again. An example is the Ray-Ban Aviator shades first introduced in the thirties and again in the 1986 motion picture Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise. Another is the Wayfarer (also manufactured by Ray-Ban) that Audrey Hepburn modeled in Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1961. However, it was in another Tom Cruise film (Risky Business, 1983) that the Wayfarer was once again thrust into the American consciousness and is still there today.

In fact, cinema and pop stars have essentially been the sunglasses trendsetters through the years. A long running ad campaign for Foster Grant came out in the 60s with the tagline, "Who's that behind those Foster Grants?" Recently, that ad came back with Raquel Welch saying she was still behind her Foster Grants. The Teashades of the 60s were considered hippie attire. Granny glasses were similar to the teashades, but were rectangle in shape and were made in various colors - considered a fashion statement at the time.

During the 80s, Jackie Onassis and her large "Jackie Os" grew into the disguise of choice for big stars trying to dodge the press.

A completely different flavor of eye shade is the Shutter, which first flashed on the scene during the 80s and was reintroduced by a recent Kanye West video. Featuring "shutters" as opposed to lenses, this fashion accessory is a favorite of the Hip Hop set and Paris Hilton, but probably is not the most efficient for true sun protection.

Manufacturers, wholesale distributors, retailers and their clients look to the world of wholesale designer sunglasses for advice on what's hot. For 2011 here's what the trend spotters are predicting:

* The Aviators are still at the top of the heap. The addition of gold guilded lenses will prove to add even more panache.

* The Tattoo, with little tattoos along at the "arms" of the sunglasses

* Plastic wrap styles will be favored by men. A lighter, rimless version will be preferred by some.

* The hottest Wayfarer, the White on Black, will definitely be a summer hit.

Sunglasses manufactured by famous designers are available for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. This luxury pricing is due to the value of the designers' famous brand and by artistic elaborations, such as sparkly crystals or even gem stones. Still, a professional buyer can get a comparable look by purchasing high-quality replicas of the hot trends. Above all, in a pinch, affordable knockoffs can certainly be picked up at the local mall, drug store or even gas station for $10-$20. But make certain to look for full UV protection if you're purchasing lower cost shades.

Protecting the eyes from UV rays is crucial for vision preservation. Today's sunglass designs add fun and fashion to the mix.
